Checklist

Test Day Checklist

The day of your knowledge or road test is not the time to discover a missing document. Use this checklist the night before so you arrive calm and ready.

  • Valid permit or learner license
  • Appointment confirmation if required
  • Required documents: ID, residency proof, Social Security
  • Glasses or contacts if required
  • Vehicle registration and insurance for driving test
  • Full tank of gas or enough charge for EV test
Tip: Arrive 15 minutes early. Rushing increases mistakes and nervousness.

Prepare the Night Before

A calm test day starts the evening before. Sleep at least seven hours, eat a real breakfast, and lay out your identification documents so you are not rushing in the morning. Arriving flustered is one of the most common reasons people fail an otherwise easy exam.

Documents to Bring

At the Testing Center

Arrive 15 minutes early, silence your phone, and read every question fully before answering. Wrong-answer penalties are rare on knowledge tests, so never leave a question blank. If you are unsure, eliminate the clearly wrong choices first.

Managing Test Anxiety

If your mind goes blank, pause and breathe for ten seconds. Skip the hardest question and return to it last. Most people pass with margin when they stay calm, so trust the study you already did.

After the Test

If you pass, ask when the physical card arrives and whether a temporary paper license is valid for driving. If you fail, note which topic gave you trouble and focus your retry on that section — most states allow a quick retake after a short wait.

Special Accommodations

If you have a reading, language, or disability need, request accommodations when you book. Many centers offer extra time, audio exams, or a translator. Asking in advance avoids a failed attempt over format rather than knowledge.

What If You Move States

If you relocate soon after passing, your new state may require its own written test to issue a local license. Keep your study notes and the handbook handy so the second test is just a quick refresher rather than starting over.
