Emergency Kit & Car Safety
A well-stocked car and a calm roadside routine turn a bad day into a minor delay. Build a kit once and check it each season.
Essential Kit
- Spare tire, jack, and lug wrench
- Jumper cables or a portable jump starter
- Flashlight, first-aid kit, and reflective triangles
- Phone charger, water, and a basic tool set
Tire Pressure Basics
Check pressure monthly with a $5 gauge — the correct PSI is on the driver door jamb, not the tire sidewall (that is the maximum). Proper pressure improves safety, grip, and fuel economy.
Roadside Triage
If you break down, pull off the road, turn on hazards, and set triangles behind the car. Call for help rather than risk highway walking. In extreme heat or cold, stay with the vehicle.
Monthly Self-Check
A five-minute walk-around catches most failures before they strand you: low tires, dim lights, worn wipers, and fluid spots under the car. Catching a cracked belt early beats a roadside breakdown at night.

- Washer fluid and wiper condition
Warning Lights
A red temperature or oil light means stop now — driving on can destroy the engine. A yellow warning allows a careful trip to a shop. Never ignore either; both signal money saved by early action.
Tires and Blowouts
Replace tires at 2/32" tread, sooner in rain or snow. A worn tire hydroplanes at low speed and lengthens stopping distance sharply. Rotate and balance them on schedule so wear stays even and the car tracks straight.
Lights and Visibility
Dim or dead bulbs reduce your sight and others' ability to see you. Carry spare fuses and a bulb or two. Clean headlights and a fresh wiper blade are among the cheapest safety upgrades that pay off in a storm.
Seasonal Prep
Before winter, test the battery, top coolant, and fit winter blades. Before summer, check A/C and coolant strength. A ten-minute seasonal check prevents the breakdowns that happen exactly when conditions are worst.
