Texas Driver License Guide
Texas driver licenses are issued by the Department of Public Safety (DPS), not the DMV. Whether you are a teen applying for your first permit or a new resident transferring an out-of-state license, the steps below cover what you need before visiting a DPS office.
Required Documents
Bring proof of identity (such as a birth certificate or passport), your Social Security number, and two documents proving Texas residency (lease, utility bill, or bank statement). All documents must be original or certified copies.
Learner License and Teen Drivers
Teens can apply for a learner license at 15 with driver education. At 16, after holding the learner license for at least six months and completing the Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) course, they may take the road test for a provisional license.

Road Test and Renewal
The road test checks basic control, parking, and following traffic law. Licenses are renewed online through the DPS "Drive OK" portal when eligible, or in person at an office. Commercial (CDL) classes follow federal and state skill standards.
New Residents
If you move to Texas, you must transfer your out-of-state license within 90 days. Bring your current license, proofs of identity and residency, and be ready for a vision exam.

About the Texas Test
Texas issues a learner license after the knowledge exam, which is drawn from the state handbook. First-time drivers under 25 must also complete a state-approved driver education course before the road test.
