Auto Loan Calculator

Before you sign a car loan, it helps to know exactly what you will pay each month and how much interest adds up over time. Our calculator shows your estimated monthly payment, total interest, and overall cost based on the loan amount, APR, and term you enter.

Understanding the Three Inputs

Loan amount is the principal you borrow after any down payment and trade-in credit. APR (annual percentage rate) is the yearly cost of borrowing including interest and fees — a lower APR means less paid overall. Term is the number of months you take to repay; common terms are 36, 48, 60, and 72 months.

Why Term Length Matters

A longer term lowers your monthly payment but increases total interest because you borrow the money for more time. A shorter term costs more per month yet saves hundreds or thousands in interest. Choose the shortest term your budget can comfortably handle.

Example

A $25,000 loan at 7.5% APR over 60 months costs roughly $500 per month and about $5,200 in total interest. Extending the same loan to 72 months drops the payment but raises total interest past $6,200.

Use the Tool

Enter your numbers below. The result is an estimate for planning only and is not a financing offer.

Before You Borrow

  • Check your credit score first — it strongly affects the APR you are offered
  • Get pre-approved by a bank or credit union before visiting a dealership
  • Compare the total cost, not just the monthly payment
  • Watch for add-ons and extended warranties that raise the loan balance
Tip: Even a 1% lower APR on a long loan can save you more than $1,000 over the life of the loan.

Reading the Payment

A loan calculator shows monthly payment, total interest, and total cost for a price, rate, and term. The same car at 60 versus 72 months can look cheaper monthly but cost far more in interest across the loan.

What Changes the Number

Smart Use

Set a monthly target first, then see what price fits. Lengthening the term to afford a car usually means overpaying; a shorter term with a smaller loan protects your budget and builds equity faster.
